The name of “La Gorgue” could come from the Flemish word “Goor” which means swampy. The commune appeared after the destruction of Minariacum in the year 880 by the Vikings. The town was once famous for its hessian fabric. Mayolle was a famous market that took place every May 1st .The Beaupré Abbey is founded in 1221 . This site, now destroyed, has been excavated. The discoveries are exposed by the ABESS. The inhabitants are nicknamed “the Magots”, in reference to the 1566 “revolt of the beggars” where a goat was substituted for the Virgin during the procession of August 15. The town was almost completely destroyed during the German offensive of 1918 and was rebuilt in the 1920s.
