Named Minariacum during the antiquity then Stegers during the Flemish domination, Estaires became French in 1769. Destroyed almost entirely during the German offensive of April 9th, 1918, Estaires was rebuilt in the neo-Flemish style.
The inhabitants are nicknamed “the Donkeys” in reference to the “rebellion of the beggars” of 1566 where a donkey was substituted for the Virgin during the procession of August 15th.
The village is famous for the Estaires hen, the cavalcade of Pentecost Monday.
Its giants are Aliboron, Jehan d’Estaires, and Saint-Pierre.
