The name of the commune comes from the radical Fleur and the suffix Baix or “Bèke” in Flemish which means stream. The city was born from the drying up of wetlands and deforestation 2,000 years ago. With Laventie, Le Nouveau Monde at La Gorgue and Sailly-sur-la-Lys, it was part of the Pays de l’Alloeu.
Fleurbaix once owned a monastery. On its site is erected a statue of Our Lady.
Close to the front line during the First World War, the town was hit hard and has four military cemeteries including the Trou Aid Post.
