Haverskerque was born from the clearing of a part of the Nieppe forest. There is no vestige of the town history before the year 1000 and the crusades. The first lords of Haverskerque, the “Havesckercke” were vassals of the Count of Flanders with whom they enlarged the kingdom of Flanders. Haverskerque castle was set on fire by the French in 1328 and disappeared in 1401.
Haverskerque is famous in Flanders for its church, a Hallekerque (church with three naves) dedicated to St. Vincent.
Every 2 nd of September, the Tomato and Old Vegetables Festival attracts more than 5,000 visitors.
