The name of Laventie could come from the Gallo-Roman “Venta” which means colony or establishment. In Latin, the word means “Sale, Market”. It was in Laventie that once took place the sale of the wealth of the “Pays de l’Alloeu”. The village was not only famous for its “Montmorency” cherries but also for its clog shoes, a leather shoe nailed on a wood sole. Laventie was almost completely destroyed during the First World War. Many military cemeteries show the sacrs of this period.
Laventie is a lively city with events like « Laventie ville ouverte » (“Laventie open city”) a big flea market organized every year on Septembe 3rd.
