At the dawn of the 1st World War the village still owned a castle. At its location, next to the Rault nature reserve, a statue of the Sacred Heart was built. Nearby, you will discover vestiges of some of the ancient moats.
Lestrem is famous for the presence of Roquette, the world’s leading agribusiness company. On this area, also exercises the brotherhood of charitable, citizens who take the oath to accompany the deceased to their last home. They are recognizable by their formal wear.
Lestrem was tragically marked during the Second World War by the massacre of the hamlet of Paradis, where 97 English soldiers were executed by a SS company on May 27, 1940.
