The name of this city comes from Saltus (forest) and Salictum (place planted with willows). Sailly-sur-la-Lys used to be the prevost court of “Pays de l’Alloeu”. It remains today the House of the Provost, a 16th century brick building listed as a Historic Monument. Sailly-sur-la-Lys has growed flax and practiced a textile activity for a long time. The footprint of this activity still marks the overall architecture of the town. Indeed , its heritage contains some treasures such as the Bac St Maur church, and chapels such as that of Our Lady of Consolation, one of the few buildings that were not destroyed during the Great War .
The giants of Sailly-sur-la-Lys are Odin the Viking, Astrid and Antonia.
